The resilience imperative

Future proofing for disasters.

Join us for breakfast and hear from the man who was Director-General of the Department of Community Safety at the time of the 2011 Queensland Floods.

Australia has significant experience of and expertise in disaster management, and Queensland’s response to unprecedented flooding in 2010-11 was described by the World Bank in 2011 as a ‘global best effort’. The frequency and impact of these events is likely to increase as a consequence of population growth, economic development and climate change, and disasters of many different natures are a feature of life in Australia.

The East Coast of Australia is vulnerable to disaster risk, with the Gold Coast being perhaps the most vulnerable community due to its location and built environment. It is therefore imperative that all those involved in emergency and disaster management –government agencies, businesses, individuals and communities, move beyond the traditional emphasis on response and recovery towards activities and initiatives that will build a whole of nation, resilience based approach to disasters and other emergencies.

Resilience involves practical steps to limit the impact of disasters on communities, businesses and the environment. It requires moving from the traditional response to a situation that shares the risk and responsibility between all sectors of the community. Framework responses must address prevention, preparedness, response and recovery to crises and disasters, enhancing individual and community resilience and reducing the costs and impacts.Griffith University has significant public administration expertise and knowledge in the area of disaster management, and the presenters of this breakfast event are thought leaders in this area. Drawing on experience from recent events and inquiries in Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia, our speakers will explore how barriers can be overcome and a culture shift can be achieved towards building individual and community resilience through shared responsibility between individuals, local communities and governments.

Key Discussions:

  • What constitutes a risk
  • Elements required for planning
  • Building resilience, the community imperative
  • Recovery from disaster

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show

EXCITEMENT is building among boating enthusiasts with tickets to the 25th anniversary Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) set to go on sale next week.

Presale tickets to SCIBS 2013 will go on sale online to subscribers on November 26 at 9am, with the public release to go on sale from November 30.

Running from May 23 to 26, next year’s event will showcase a raft of international boating brands, products and technologies on display alongside the superb backdrop of the award-winning Sanctuary Cove marina and The Marine Village.

Mulpha Sanctuary Cove sales, sponsorship and events manager Johan Hasser says the SCIBS team is planning a bumper boat show, with crowd numbers expected to exceed the 37,000 attendance in 2012.

Hasser says many of the big names in boating have already secured space at next year’s show, with some even looking to book bigger exhibition spaces to bring larger displays and more products to showcase.

“We’ve had plenty of feedback from returning exhibitors who are looking at taking more space next year, to be able to showcase a greater selection of their products so it looks like we will have lots for visitors to look forward to,” he says.

“We’re also including more family-friendly and female-orientated activities to the 25th anniversary show so there’s something for mums and for the kids.”

SCIBS has positioned itself over the years as Australia’s foremost marine trade display, which gives the community, boating enthusiasts and marine industry representatives the rare opportunity to network and view the latest and greatest boating and marine products on offer.

In 2013, SCIBS will showcase some of the world’s most prestigious and innovative boats and marine brands. There will also be an incredible array of kayaks, stand up paddle boards, jet skis and wakeboards, the greenest and leanest engines on the market, safety equipment, performance and lifestyle apparel, books, charts and navigational equipment, plus high quality gadgets and covetable nautical timepieces.

Offering something for the whole family, SCIBS will also feature a full program of live entertainment, fashion parades, cooking demonstrations, seminars and safety talks as well as a fantastic kids marine program and Women on Water program throughout the four day event.

Early bird prices will be available for purchase throughout December and January, with 1 Day Adult passes available from $19 and one-day concession passes from $15. Discounts are also available for groups of 10 or more. Children under the age of 18 are free with a paying adult (up to four children, per paying adult).
