Management body under the microscope

A STRATEGIC review of the board of Surfers Paradise Management (SPM) will be undertaken by KPMG to enhance the organisation's services to the Surfers Paradise area.

The board supported the move as 'critical and sound corporate governance practice', considering the exponential growth of the precinct and the expanding body of work being undertaken by SPM. Chairman Graeme Downie and chief executive officer, Liliana Montague, recognised the need for an independent review as the peak management body sets its sights on future challenges.

Montague, who will leave the organisation after a three-year tenure in December, says the board recognised the changing social and business environment and supported the project.

"It's an opportunity to re-align the company's direction with that of the stakeholders and the ongoing requirements of the precinct," says Montague.

"In our role as the representative body for Surfers Paradise, we need to constantly assess and evaluate

our output and deliverables to ensure they continue to provide value to our stakeholders. This process is important from a business planning perspective and will assist us to refine our core functions and responsibilities which have grown over the years to include everything from the twice weekly Beachfront Night Markets to event coordination for Gold Coast Schoolies Week."

Montague says the organisation had grown from a 'two staff operation with a black and white photo copier' to a slick and professional service employing around 25 staff. The board appointed third party KPMG, to undertake the review due to their long association with a variety of Gold Coast businesses and experience in strategic planning. A key part of the KPMG process will be consultation with Surfers Paradise stakeholders to ascertain their needs and requirements of SPM in the immediate and long term. their feedback over the next three weeks.
