A JOINT venture between NSW Sugar Milling Co-operative and Delta Electricity will transform the Condong Sugar Mill into one of the largest renewable electricity power stations in Australia - wholly fuelled by sugar cane waste.

Located south of the Queensland border near Murwillumbah, the mill has been transformed into a $90 million green energy producer with the potential to supply up to half of the Tweed Valley power grid.

The 30-megawatt plant will also help meet Australia's greenhouse gas reduction targets and will use recycled materials, including sewage waste from a nearby plant.

The mill will run off the energy produced at about 5MW and after that, will be able to supply 25MW of renewable energy into the grid, which constitutes about half of the Tweed Valley's requirements.

The new technology will also enable green-cane harvesting, which will improve air quality. It is estimated the mills at Condong and Broadwater could save 400,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas each year.
