$1 million IT upgrade for student training

< Previous Next >

Mar, 2007

A $1 million upgrade to the GOLD Coast Institute of TAFE information and communications technology (ICT) will give students and their employers improved access to training.

The State Government will spend $14.8 million this financial year boosting ICT capacity across Queensland's 13 TAFE institutes.

Institute director Deb Daly says the funding will mean more computers for students and staff and expanded Internet access.

"TAFE Queensland's ICT systems will be revamped to work better and faster for students, employers, teachers and other users of vocational education," she says.

The $1 million will be used to upgrade more than 420 computers and ICT equipment.

It will also help fund wider bandwidth for faster Internet speed and downloads and to deploy new wireless technology, enabling staff and students access to the institute's ICT system from various campus locations in the State.

Ms Daly says the investment in TAFE Queensland's ICT presents 'real opportunities' to work with the ICT industry to support reforms to the training system outlined in the Government's 'skills plan'.

"A better ICT system is essential for TAFE Queensland to quickly and effectively address the State's industry skills shortages," she says.

"More effective use of information and communications technology will strengthen every element of the TAFE system, from more flexible student access and accelerated skills acquisition to greater resource sharing between trainers and better intellectual property management.

"It will also make administrative processes easier for students and staff, improve customer relationship management and maximise training delivery funds."
