THE world's richest bull-riding body is bringing its multi-million dollar competition to the Gold Coast.
Expected to inject $5 million into the local economy, the premier international event will be filmed for broadcast in Australia, the US, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Europe and Asia.
The US Professional Bull Riders, Inc (PBR) has partnered in Australia and New Zealand with Dainty Consolidated Entertainment and confirmed its inaugural PBR World Cup - the biggest international event in its history - will be held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in June.
PBR chief executive officer Randy Bernard says the show is a coup for the Gold Coast and will set a precedent for future international bull-riding events.
"We're proud to confirm that PBR is now in Australia and there couldn't be a bigger or better way for us to arrive than by holding our first PBR World Cup here - the biggest international event of its type that we've ever done," he says.
Competing for their countries in teams of five, bull-riding champions from the US, Australia, Brazil, Canada and Mexico will battle for the winner-takes-all $100,000 prize purse in what is the world's 'toughest sport on dirt'.
Dainty Consolidated spokesperson Paul Dainty says PBR has grown the sport exponentially and it is now enjoying unprecedented global popularity.
"This is in no small way because a PBR bull-riding competition is an entertainment spectacular. It's real thrills packaged with the frills of a rock concert - rings of fire, big-screen videos, laser lights and pyrotechnics," he says.
"I've never seen anything like it. It's true gladiator stuff - man against titanically powerful beasts (the bulls weigh up to 900kg), danger so close and real you can smell it - and it happens in seconds. It's fast, exciting and it appeals to all ages."
The Australian PBR Touring Pro marks the first time prizemoney won in Australia will contribute to international standings and recognise qualifiers for US and international events. Troy Dunn, Australia's only bull-riding world champion, is thrilled with the event is coming to our shores.
"(It) will give riders here in Australia a chance to advance their career internationally and access to the big prizemoney, which is getting richer as PBR grows the sport," he says.
"A PBR bull ride is like a Hollywood-blockbuster and they're going to really raise the profile here in Australia."
The top 30 riders netted from the Australian PBR Touring Pro qualify to compete against 10 of the best from the US at the PBR World Cup precursor - the Jupiters Casino PBR Troy Dunn International, at the Townsville Entertainment Centre on May 25-26. The country's top five riders will make up the Australian Team to compete at the PBR World Cup at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in June.
The annual prizemoney on PBR bull-riding tours totals more than $US10 million each year and champions post career-earnings of up to almost $US4 million each.
The Jupiters Casino PBR World Cup runs from June 8-10.
