Quality traineeships

< Previous Next >

Mar, 2009

COMMONWEALTH funded traineeships are a great opportunity for employers and employees to beat the meltdown according to Angela McGregor, general manager of Quality Training Solutions. She says it gives existing staff the opportunity to undertake flexible training, on the job, which have been designed to pre existing goals.
“Traineeships at the Certificate IV level are an excellent way for employers to develop the skills of their existing staff, such as supervisors and managers,” says McGregor.
“The staff member gains as they develop their skills and employability, while gaining a nationally recognised qualification and in most instances the training is conducted through flexible delivery, with the trainer coming to the workplace.”
But there are many myths about traineeships which may deter many employees. McGregor answers questions about the myths and rewards:
Do I have to go to class?
In order to complete traineeships at certificate IV level it is not necessary to attend classes. In most cases the trainer will come to the workplace. Assessment is in the form of projects, research and other activities. There are no exams.
Who is the course relevant for?
The course is relevant to supervisors and managers. There is a general myth that a traineeship is too basic for supervisors and managers but in reality the course is perfect for this group. Furthermore course work is developed to meet the skills and knowledge required for the individual and the workplace. Traineeships cover a wide range of units including staff recruitment, managing time, team effectiveness, staff development, occupational health and safety, finance, planning and managing meetings.
Will my wage drop?
Wages will remain the same. A traineeship does not affect the income of staff.
What if I already know what they are teaching?
The traineeship program is structured in a way which allows participants to only undertake training in areas where training is required. The recognition of prior learning allows participants to reduce time required to complete the certificate.
